If Words Matter

Therefore, I will always remind you about these things—even though you already know them and are standing firm in the truth you have been taught. And it is only right that I should keep on reminding you as long as I live. – 2 Peter 1:12-13

So there’s this script I seem to follow on the harder days. It’s not something that I consciously think about; I’ve been doing it so long that it’s habit. And it’s a bad one.

I’ve been more and more convicted lately that it’s time to replace the self-defeating words I say. Words matter, even the words you say to yourself. Maybe especially those.

I can think of nothing better to replace them with than the Word of Truth. Today I’m digging into Scripture to find a better way to process.

Here’s my top 5… maybe it’ll get you started.

I say, “I’m done!”
He says, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” – Ephesians 2:10

I say, “I can’t do this anymore.”

He says, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” – Philippians 4:13

I say, “What have I done to deserve this?”

He says, “Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world.” – 1 Peter 4:12-13

I say, “What good can I possibly do for others, when I cannot handle my own grief?”

He says, “He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.”2 Corinthians 1:4

I say, “I hate this.”

He says, “For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come.” – Hebrews 13:14

Which ones could you add?

Father in Heaven, You are glorious. Thank You for giving us so many of the right words, right at our fingertips. Help us to hide them in our hearts. In Jesus’ Name, Amen…

  1. I’m so glad God reminds us of the truth we need to hear – even though we technically already know it. 🙂 Thanks for linking up at #ThreeWordWednesday.
