The Power of Light

Lift up your eyes on high
And see who has created these stars,
The One who leads forth their host by number,
He calls them all by name;
Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power,
Not one of them is missing. – Isaiah 40:26

There’s nothing quite like a Utah sky, especially at night. Deep, layered velvet. Past black and into indigo hues that boggle the mind. So many brilliant pinpoints of light that your eyes can scarcely take it in.

I lived in Utah when I began to get sicker and sicker. Down and down the rabbit hole I went. Pain, loss, disability, confusion. Questions and anger and blowing about like a balloon without a tether. I think God planned those Utah skies when He created the world. I believe He looked forward into 2010 and knew that I would need those diamonds on that never-ending black.

No matter my questions or angst or sorrow at any given moment… even when I didn’t think I would survive… yes, even then…

Out of all of the beautiful verses in His glorious Word, this one verse kept me grounded. This one verse was my golden thread running through each whispered fear of the enemy, through each accepted lie by the same.

Those Utah skies… He didn’t just create them. Those pinpoints of light that should be snuffed out by all that dark… He calls them by name. Each one that is part of a galaxy too marvelous to be numbered are led by one God.

Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power,
Not one of them is missing.

That immense might and that fantastic power, unleashed and brilliant over a host of balls of gas.

Are you not worth much more than they?

It’s the whisper that, Thank God, kept me up at night. Kept me reminded and focused and in awe.

God saw that the light was good.

That’s why the new Everlasting Light Collection at DaySpring is exactly what I’ve been waiting for. There are home décor items and art and jewelry, all shimmery and scriptural and grounding.

  1. I don’t think anyone can look at the night sky, admire the sparkling stars, and not know there is a God who created all that intricate beauty! I think God puts reminders of His strength and greatness all around just so, at times like you had in Utah, we are reminded of His presence and we will have courage to keep going.

    Blessings, Joan

  2. One of the things my husband talks about most from his time in Afghanistan is how beautiful the sky was. He said the stars were just like nothing he had previously seen. Reading your post makes me think of my husband there, looking up and being comforted by God. And leaves me even more grateful for how He saw Him through that time away. He is so good! Love you, sweet friend. I’ve been thinking of you and praying for you LOTS. {Hugs}

  3. We are on the same page, my sweet Sister! I am working on a blog post for the 31st about the Him being the light of the world. I’m going to try to share 31 Scripture verses on light. Guess what song I will be sharing? I love this song by The Afters. It encourages me so much! I will share a link to this page. Thank you for continuing to share what He has done for you – you bless us when you do.

  4. There is an uncountable …gazillion beautiful stars hung in the sky by our Creator. They light the night and dazzle all who gaze at them, but you my friend are one in a gazillion billion X a million trillion. You are his creation that shines so brightly through all storms and points others to him, and brings glory to him because of how you shine! Sending out a BIG hug filled with lots of love! Cathy

  5. This was so beautiful, Shelly. You know, I have terrible trouble with anxiety – and consequently, I also struggle with insomnia. But your most uplifting post reminded me of something that happened a few weeks ago. Just two years ago, my husband and I moved to the mountains (after I had lived in the same house and town for almost 29 years). It’s been quite a big adjustment. But, one thing that I absolutely love is the beautiful dark sky full of stars.

    So, one night, in the middle of another sleepless night, I walked to my kitchen window and looked out at the starry sky. I whispered to God, “You know, Lord, that is one beautiful sky that You’ve created.” At that exact moment, the biggest shooting star I have ever seen streaked across the sky. I truly felt like God had just whispered, “It’s OK. I’m right here.”

    I am taking that verse that you’ve talked about today, and I’m putting it somewhere where I can read it in the middle of the night. For the One who calls the stars by name, also knows mine.

    “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O LORD, will keep me safe.” (Psalm 4:8, NLT)

    GOD BLESS!

    (I didn’t see the Recommendation Saturday link this week. I trust and pray that you’re doing OK…)

    This is such a beautiful post and a great reminder to simply look up. By looking up we can focus on God and see his wonder. Thank you for that much needed reminder.
