He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.
– John 3:30

I was brilliant and white and perfectly smooth
tapered to perfection with a wick standing tall and proud

Never could I have guessed how being lit would change me

Drips of grief
Softening of tears
I disappear beneath the pain
the flame brings

I melt in sorrow
as my colors fade

and blend with the soot
of heartfelt offerings

Only the best for You

As I gather into a shapeless puddle
my only prayer is that I will still diffuse a pleasing fragrance

That the nub that I am
can still shine Your light

Light me up, Lord. Help me to burn until I am nothing and You are all. In Jesus’ Name, Amen…

  1. Wow, Shelly. You’ve again touched me deeply. May this be my prayer, too!
    Love you, dear one!

  2. Shelly – this touched me so deeply.

First, because I know you and you do shine for Him in so many ways as you face and accept your challenges.

Secondly, I often have candles lit around my little haven here. What a great reminder your insights will now be to me as I pray in the candlelight – as I surrender to the Light and let the Lord work out His will for my life.

  3. I’m Lynn’s step-sister and she sent me a link to this post. It touched me very deeply. I love candles…love watching them burn and watching the flames flicker and shine their bright light and warmth. I loved your metaphor here of how when the light of the Lord’s love is shining through us, then “we” melt away. Thank you! <3

  4. So happy to have come over from Count My Blessings link up. You words are so poetic and with each drip of the wax, with each line you wrote and as the photos progressed, I saw myself and instances in my life where I have been transformed. Right now I have a candle that is down to the nub but the fragrance still fills my bedroom and the candle went all the way low 2 weeks ago. Yes, we are still a sweet fragrance in His nostrils.

  5. Shelly so beautiful, just reaches down intoy soul. Thank you. Hugs, Di

  6. Shelly this message went to the very depth of my soul. So beautiful. Thank you.

  7. Thanks dear Shelly, your post (as usual) touched my heart and encouraged my spirit. I so want my life to be about our Saviour. X

  8. Beautiful, poetic words. It is true–there is pain and sacrifice involved in being a light. Today, at a pro-life seminar we lit candles and sang this song.

“Carry your candle, run to the darkness
Seek out the hopeless, confused and torn
Hold out your candle for all to see it
Take your candle, and go light your world.”

I’m visiting from the weekend Brew.
