I Am From…

We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where He is from.”The man answered and said to them, “Well, here is an amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes.” – John 9:29-30

I am from flea market pillows,

from scriptures in frames and way too many books.

I am from the live oak tree,

its long limbs covered in the Spanish moss I remember as if it were my own.

I am from Christmas lights and cocoa and a face full of freckles,

from Brian and Austin and Carissa.

I’m from quiet talks and happy dances

and from staying up way too late.

I am from long drives and loud music, laughing too loud and making up big.

From expansive vistas that treat the eyes as well as the soul,

and taking chances because the ones you love are right there with you.

Dear Lord, help me to always remember where I’m from, and help me to create a place my children will look back on in wonder and fond love. Thank you for all of the people and places and things that have made me who I am, especially in You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen…

If you’d like to create your own ‘I Am From’ Poem, here’s the template that I used.  It is not my own.  I’d really love if you’d leave a link to your own ‘I Am From’ post here in the comments, so that I can follow it and get to know you better!  Where are you from, Friend?

  1. Dear sweet Shelly
What an interesting way to present your post! Oh, we do well to always remember our loved ones and wonderful times, but also that we were slaves to the evil one, lost in his kingdom of darkness until our Lord Jesus has set us free!! This is just the greatest news of all ages.

    • Hi, Mia! 🙂 It’s a form I found, the link is at the bottom of the post, if you want to try it too. I had a lot of fun making it. 🙂 You’re right, remembering who we are in Christ is the best part of any memory! Heart Hugs, Shelly <3

  2. Hi Shelly – visiting from Behind the Scenes – and finding so much that feels familiar here. I think I have some of these same things in my own “I am from …” I know there is Spanish moss, cajun gumbo, fried catfish (hush puppies anyone?), old quilts, and older Bible handed down with love. What a neat way to share all of that here!

    • Hi, Rebekah, it’s so nice to meet you! Wow, seems we do have a lot in common, huh? If you decide to use the form to make a poem of your own, I’d love if you’d let me know so I can read it! Heart Hugs, Shelly <3

    • Thanks so much for dropping by and leaving me a sweet comment, Kimberly! Glad you enjoyed the post. Heart Hugs, Shelly <3

  3. This is so sweet, Shelly! So you are a Cajun girl, huh? My hubs and I love N’awlins. Such amazing culture, food, music. This is a good place to be from. But even better from within God’s love.

    • Yes, indeed! 🙂 And just like God’s love, there’s no other place like it! Heart Hugs, Shelly <3

  4. I love these! I think I actually have the template saved somewhere but have never gotten around to doing it. I enjoyed reading yours and learning more about where you’re from.

    • Thanks, Janet!! I love them, too, and it was exciting finally creating my own 🙂 Heart Hugs, Shelly <3
