Recommendation Saturday: Prayer Time

O God, you are my God;
    I earnestly search for you.
My soul thirsts for you;
my whole body longs for you
in this parched and weary land
    where there is no water.
I have seen you in your sanctuary
and gazed upon your power and glory.
Your unfailing love is better than life itself;
    how I praise you!
I will praise you as long as I live,
lifting up my hands to you in prayer.
You satisfy me more than the richest feast.
I will praise you with songs of joy.

I lie awake thinking of you,
meditating on you through the night.
Because you are my helper,
I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings.
I cling to you;
your strong right hand holds me securely.

– Psalm 63:1-8

When was the last time you just sat and soaked in His presence?

Longing for a Constant in the Midst of Change?

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows” (James 1:17)

Sometimes I feel like this life of chronic illness and disability is a never-ending guessing game. I keep trying to adapt, find a new rhythm, but the rules keep changing on me.

Learning your new activity level is hard! It can be cringe-worthy as you wait to see what will set your body off. It’s especially hard when no day is the same as the one before. How are we supposed to find a “new norm” when the rules are constantly changing on us with no warning?

Rest Ministries is a really special place. Seriously.
Please while you’re finishing this post there, take a few minutes to look around and see what they have to offer. <3
See You There.

What God Does with Stones

And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. – Ezekiel 36:26

Take this stone of fear

press it carefully into the curve of the leather strap

and use it to show that Your power alone can slay any giant

cairn photo

Let this stone of helplessness

be just the beginning of a towering ebenezer

reminding the world that our God helps

desert stone photo

Use this stone of stubbornness

to pillow my head as I wrestle and realize

that a blessing is mine and God always delivers

When this stone marks a hard ending

shake the ground and roll it away

and send Your angels to remind me this is only the beginning

Only You could take this Stone of stumbling

and create a masterpiece of a tabernacle within me

with a Cornerstone that is vaguely familiar but completely changed

stone heart photo

Remove this stone of hopelessness

that longs to beat inside this chest

and restore a heart of flesh that longs only for You

Dear God, please never let me forget that You can do miraculous, unexpected things with stones. In Jesus’ Name, Amen…

When the Flesh Demands Better

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. – John 10:10

How can we believe that this scripture is true, when we live with constant pain? It’s almost impossible to hold to God’s goodness when the hits just keep coming and our body and mind are already battered beyond recognition.

Is this the abundant life you speak of, Jesus? This? Really??

This kind of questioning, which I’m guilty of now and then, comes from a fleshy place. Do you know what I mean?

For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace – Romans 8:5-6

I’m a bit obsessed with gaining abundant health. I love me some abundant relief. Count me in for the abundant ease and wealth. Where do I sign?

But that is such a very limited viewpoint, isn’t it?

Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? – Galatians 3:3

We have access to the Great I AM, and we’re requesting only that He fix this earthly body? That He take care only of my worries for this week?

For we are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh Philippians 3:3

No, I want to aim higher. I want more. And I need to understand that the Jesus who uttered these words knew what was in store for us, and He Himself called it Abundance.

eternal photo

Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit. – 1 Peter 3:18

For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. – Galatians 6:8-9

Father God, drag my reluctant heart back to the beautiful truth. Thank You for giving us Your Spirit, so that we may live unfettered by these earthly pains and cares. In Jesus’ Name, Amen…

Christ the Lord is Risen!!!

They rushed back to tell the others, but no one believed them.
Still later he appeared to the eleven disciples as they were eating together. He rebuked them for their stubborn unbelief because they refused to believe those who had seen him after he had been raised from the dead.

And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. – Mark 16:13-15

How can you know this great and glorious truth and not have your socked just awed right off??

Let’s celebrate today! Let all Christians join together and declare the truth in song!

Christ the Lord Is Risen Today
Lyrics ~ Charles Wesley, 1707-1788
Music ~ Lyra Davidica, 1708

Christ the Lord is ris’n today, Alleluia!

Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia!

Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!

Sing, ye heav’ns, and earth reply, Alleluia!

Love’s redeeming work is done, Alleluia!

Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia!

Death in vain forbids Him rise, Alleluia!

Christ has opened Paradise, Alleluia!

Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia!

Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!

Dying once He all doth save, Alleluia!

Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia!

Soar we now where Christ has led, Alleluia!

Foll’wing our exalted Head, Alleluia!

Made like Him, like Him we rise, Alleluia!

Ours the cross, the grave, the skies, Alleluia!

Hail the Lord of earth and heaven, Alleluia!

Praise to Thee by both be given, Alleluia!

Thee we greet triumphant now, Alleluia!

Hail the Resurrection, thou, Alleluia!

King of glory, soul of bliss, Alleluia!

Everlasing life is this, Alleluia!

Thee to know, Thy power to prove, Alleluia!

Thus to sing, and thus to love, Alleluia!

Sunday Scripture: 4/5/15

easter photo

She turned to leave and saw someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she didn’t recognize him.

“Dear woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her.“Who are you looking for?”

She thought he was the gardener. “Sir,” she said, “if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him.”

“Mary!” Jesus said.

She turned to him and cried out, “Rabboni!”

Why the Prosperity Gospel is No Gospel At All

sun photo

For the Lord God is our sun and our shield.
He gives us grace and glory.
The Lord will withhold no good thing
from those who do what is right. –
Psalm 84:11

Can I be real with you here for just a moment? The so-called “Prosperity Gospel”, otherwise known as “Health and Wealth Doctrine”, is on my last nerve. I’ve stood silent as long as the Spirit will allow. It’s time to bring things into the light. See the truth is that the “Prosperity Gospel” is no gospel at all.

Gospel means ‘good news’ and what this sect is teaching is anything but. What they are teaching is being used to beat people up. It causes people to turn from God, to feel that God has turned from them. It’s losing souls and as their numbers grow, they become bolder and louder about spreading this filth and lies. Enough. I’ve had enough.

The only way I know to combat what is being taught in error is to let the scriptures speak for themselves. The scripture I used to open this post is one that the PG people really love.

The Lord will withhold no good thing
from those who do what is right.

Well, gee that sounds good, doesn’t it? Who doesn’t want a piece of that??

The problem lies in the fact that the worldly definition of “good” is opposite of what scripture tells us to focus on. Opposite of what we’re promised or should be chasing after. Let me show you what I mean.

The world (and the Health and Wealth Doctrine) teach that what we can expect is:

Health. Supposedly, if you ask and believe and are living uprightly, you will be freed from every shackle of sickness. It follows that chronic illness is allowed or even caused by the sick individual.

health photo

But here is what God says about it:

Don’t drink only water. You ought to drink a little wine for the sake of your stomach because you are sick so often. – 1 Timothy 5:23

So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud. Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said,“My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong. – 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

Or perhaps Paul and Timothy were wayward or faithless?

Wealth. According to this false doctrine, God wants us to have abounding worldly riches and never have need of money. We should each have 3 new cars and at least 2 mansions, and the more earthly treasures we have, the more proof of God’s love for us.

wealth photo

But here is what God says about it:

Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.” – Matthew 6:19-20

The hot sun rises and the grass withers; the little flower droops and falls, and its beauty fades away. In the same way, the rich will fade away with all of their achievements. – James 1:11

My dear brothers and sisters, how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others? For example, suppose someone comes into your meeting dressed in fancy clothes and expensive jewelry, and another comes in who is poor and dressed in dirty clothes. If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich person, but you say to the poor one, “You can stand over there, or else sit on the floor”—well, doesn’t this discrimination show that your judgments are guided by evil motives? – James 2:1-4

Or perhaps it was our Jesus who misunderstood?

Power. It is taught within these doctrines that power = God’s favor. You can tell how great of a Christian one is by how much power he holds. How much respect he commands. How many followers she has.

But here is what God says about it:

After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked,“Do you understand what I was doing? You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message. Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them. – John 13:12-17

So those who are last now will be first then, and those who are first will be last.” – Matthew 20:16

Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God. – 1 Corinthians 1:26-29

Or maybe we’ve forgotten that the Christ was despised and rejected?

Fame. It goes hand in hand with all of the above that the followers of these lies believe that fame is a “good” gift from God. The holier their lives, the more fame is due them.

But here is what God says about it:

My servant grew up in the Lord’s presence like a tender green shoot,
like a root in dry ground.
There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance,
nothing to attract us to him.
He was despised and rejected—
a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief.
We turned our backs on him and looked the other way.
He was despised, and we did not care. – Isaiah 53:2-3

You are coming to Christ, who is the living cornerstone of God’s temple. He was rejected by people, but he was chosen by God for great honor. – 1 Peter 2:4

If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you. Do you remember what I told you? ‘A slave is not greater than the master.’ Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you. And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you.” – John 15:18-20

Oh, I’m sorry, did you think those things applied only to the Son of God and His 12 disciples?

The bottom line: Know your Scripture. Know the character of our Great God. Don’t let others twist the truth around in your mind until what you cling to is actually a lie from the enemy.

The true gospel is Good News, indeed.

Heavenly Lord, Help us to cling only and always to You. Protect us from these sneaky lies and half-truths that cause us to doubt our faith and Your favor. In Jesus’ Name, Amen…

The Time Marvel Perfectly Described Brain Injury

Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing. – 2 Corinthians 2:15

So one of our favorite family shows to watch on TV is Marvel Agents of Shield. As we were catching up this past weekend on episodes we’d missed, something really jumped out at me.

I’ll fill you in a bit in case you don’t watch the show. Fitz is this crazy-smart scientist nerd hero. He saved the girl he’s in love with and suffered a brain injury in the process. It’s been incredibly hard and frustrating for him, but he’s still fighting on because that’s what heroes do, right?

Mac is a big strong tough guy who’s befriended Fitz in an amazing way. Recently his body was taken over by an alien bad guy and he was unable to stop himself from doing bad-guy-things. He’s still trying to process all that. Fitz was trying to get him to open up and talk about it. He ended by saying, “I know what you’re going through.”

Mac asked angrily, “Really? You know what it’s like to lose control? To be trapped inside your own body, unable to tell it what to do? To watch yourself hurt the people that you care about?”

Fitz answers, “Yeah.”

Yeah, Mac. In fact, we do.

Who knew marvel had such a handle on Traumatic Brain Injury?!

Later in the same episode, Fitz comforts the newly-inhuman Skye…

She sobs, “There’s something drastically wrong with me.”

And Fitz assures, “No, you’re just different now. You’re just different now… and there’s nothing wrong with that.”

Is it cheesy to admit I cried?

Thought you might need to hear it, too.

Heavenly Father, Thank You for understanding. Thank You for others who understand, who stand beside. Thank You for loving even though we’re different now. In Jesus’ Name, Amen…

KJV Note-Taker’s Bible: A Review and a Giveaway!

_225_350_Book.1444.cover

If someone claims, “I know God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth.  But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him.  Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did. – 1 John 2:4-6

Book Description

Finally, a Bible that has plenty of room for taking notes during public or private worship, small-group fellowships, or any other time or place you feel the need to make comments on the Bible. No more cramped writing in tiny margins—the KJV Note-Taker’s Bible makes it easy to stay organized and neat. Personalize the text of God’s Word to your life as never before, and treasure this record of your spiritual journey. Includes the complete text of the classic King James Version.

Features:

  • Deluxe wide margins for note takers
  • Complete King James Version text
  • Double-column text for easy reading
  • Words of Christ in red letter

—————————————————————–

While the King James Version has never been my favorite for daily reading, there is a beauty to the language used and a familiarity from younger years.

I enjoyed the way that the pages are made in this Bible. They are thin, yet sturdy enough to take writing on without tearing. They also don’t have that “see-through” quality that makes writing in some bibles frustrating. I love that the Bible is hardcover with a dustjacket, so it’s nice a sturdy.

The writing is small for my poor eyesight, but the double-columns do make it somewhat easier to follow with a magnifier.

There is a basic concordance in the back of the Bible, but it’s strange to read a bible with no footnotes or cross-reference, after so many years of being accustomed to that deeper study as I read.

For the right person, this would be a wonderful Bible. I’m happy to give it away. If you’re interested in entering this week-long giveaway, please use the widget to enter below. God Bless!
