Why I Take Pleasure in My Weaknesses
Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong. – 2 Corinthians 12:8-10
It seems so ridiculous to me, this concept of taking pleasure in weakness. It’s a foreign concept to our human nature and the culture we live in. One of the worst things about being ill and disabled is that we gain more and more weakness every day. Physically, emotionally, mentally, and sometimes it feels like even spiritually.
But Jesus… here’s that topsy-turvy beauty again. You see, those things that we feel are obvious failures, those things we’d most like to patch up and gloss over and hide from the world, those re the ones that showcase how the power of Christ can work through me. THIS is where the pleasure comes in. Our weaknesses are actually our strength, because in reality any strength we truly have is only in Christ to begin with.
For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.
We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves. – 2 Corinthians 4:6-7
We don’t even have to guess what the great power is…..
We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed. Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies. – 2 Corinthians 4:8-10
Heaven knows I’d be crushed without Him. For certain, we’d be driven to despair. The hunting wouldn’t end well. And oh, how many times now would I have been destroyed? Instead, we showcase life… eternal life.
And so…
That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Sounds like an invitation to surrender. How will you answer?
Holy Lord, may I only boast in You. Thank You for the thorns which keep me from pride, remind me to lean, and grant me focus. In Jesus’ Name, Amen…

Why the Good Days Cut Both Ways

I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. – Philippians 4:12-13
If you have chronic illness or disability, I know you’ll understand what I’m about to say. Those good days, as much as we long for them, are a double-edged sword, aren’t they?
The way we feel on those days, the things we can do again, the dreams it feels are coming alive again after all… those are beautiful things. They are what we pray for. The memories made on those days can carry us through many a darker day. Those are happy-dance days and Praise God days and I love having them and hearing about them and sharing them.
But then the next day. The day when you’re back to awful, or worse than you even were before the good day… those are even harder than they’d normally be, simply because of the comparison we can’t help but do. The next day stands in stark contrast to the happy-dance day.
I want you to know that you are not alone in these struggles, Dear One. I’m dancing in joy with you when you share your good days. I understand when the next day is harder than it should be.
So does Jesus. The above scripture promises us that He holds the secret. You can do both kind of days through Christ, who will always give you the strength you need.
And there’s one more comparison He wants you to keep in mind…
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. – Romans 8:18
On that bright and glorious day, all of these struggles will just fall away. What a day that will be. And me and Jesus? We’ll be standing with you then, too.
Precious Lord, please take our hand through whatever kind of day we’re having. Help us to reach out to each other, too. Thank You for the Hope that is You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen…

Tips on Tuesday: The Dreaded UTI
Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. – Romans 12:10
There is so much about living with chronic illness and disability that is strange. Hard. Embarrassing. Sometimes it can make us feel helpless or alone, when our bodies seem to turn on us or be completely foreign to us.
I am not a medical professional, but I have lived with some issues and am happy to share tips or understanding with all of these issues will be female more than male. I’ll warn you if that happens. Some of these problems are very personal and I will be as tactful as I can in addressing them, but I want us to be able to come out of the shadows with some of this and help each other.
To that end, I will be starting “Tips on Tuesday” for as long as there is interest. If you have a question or a tip, I’d love if you’d email me at and share it with me. All tips given will be through me and all emailers will remain completely anonymous. I hope this series will be helpful to all of you.
So for today, the first “Tips on Tuesday” is about something I am going through yet again. Over the past couple of years, I have had almost continual Urinary Tract Infections (UTI). These are very painful and make you feel completely miserable throughout your body. I want to give you several tips related to UTI, as it is a common ailment for the chronically ill and the disabled.

Frankly, a huge part of my problem is that I do not empty the bladder completely. I am also allergic to all the best antibiotics. A wonderful friend of mine who was a nurse showed me a wonderful website with tips for emptying. It had suggestions I hadn’t even thought of or heard of and has been a great resource to me.
I also use Azos. I use prescription strength, and it does grant relief. You can also buy it over-the-counter (OTC), but be certain that you choose the pain relief one and not the straight cranberry one, because that one is strictly preventive and will not help with pain.
A little baking soda stirred into your glass of water might help with pain as well. It’s not too bad to get down and if it helps, is well worth it. An infected bladder is a very sensitive bladder, so while infected, avoid anything that would hurt an open wound… like citrus, carbonation, caffeine, vinegary things like pickles, even strawberries are acidic. Here’s a great website to help you know what food and drink to avoid during infection.
Food and Drink that May Aggravate Pain of UTI
Baths are known to cause or aggravate UTI. So are other more intimate times with a husband or wife. Please give your body some tender loving care during this sensitive time while it is infected.
When I have a UTI or even just a spastic bladder, a heating pad on low, held between the legs, up against your body, will give you unbelievable relief. It’s weird, but hey, whatever works.
Antibiotics are known to strip good bacteria from your body, along with the bad. This causes an overgrowth of yeast in the body, also known as a yeast infection. If you’ve ever had one of these, you know what torture they are. They can happen to men or women and can be passed between the two during intimate contact. I keep a pack of extra-strength Probiotics in my fridge and I take them every day that I am on an antibiotic. For me, this is every day. They will not hurt you and will many times prevent a yeast infection. Also, anytime I am given antibiotics for any issue, I request a prescription for Diflucan. It’s one pill, taken orally, and is much better and less hassle at treating an infection, should you get one. I fill the prescription only if needed. Most doctors are more than willing to do this for you, especially if you face frequent infections.
I hope this has helped you to see what “Tips on Tuesday” will be like. Also, if you have any of your own tips to add, email those to me and I’ll include them at the start of next week, before we get into another Tip.
Thanks for being here! <3
Dear Lord, thank You for always creating community for us. You know exactly who we need and when. Please help us to reach out to each other. In Jesus’ Name, Amen…

Our Daily Bread
And He said to them, “When you pray, say:
‘Father, hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
‘Give us each day our daily bread.’ – Luke 11:2-3
God reminds me often of this scripture. I’d say He reminds me even more frequently since I’ve become chronically ill. I think it’s because I’m always trying to peer off into the future, prepare for the coming days, be calmer about whether or not tomorrow’s needs will be met.
I’ve been studying this weekend about how serious God is about this “daily bread” thing. It’s not a new concept. Even in the Old Testament, He was pretty clear about it.
See, the Israelites… wow, they were awfully short of faith after all they had seen. It makes me so sad to recognize so much of them in myself.
The whole congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The sons of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat, when we ate bread to the full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.” – Exodus 16:2-3
Sound familiar? Here’s what I sound like:
Grumble, groan, moan, whine… “It would have been better, Lord, if you just would have taken me Home the last time I was in surgery. I could have just slipped off. At least I wouldn’t have to be sitting here in more pain, causing financial burden to my family. Why have you let me live just to suffer like this?”

Seriously, some days I don’t even have the faith of a mustard seed. And yet, look at the tenderness with which God answered. He didn’t just send food their way. He could have. He could have directed edible animals to wander into camp and jump into soup pots. He could have caused grain to grow beside their tents just as surely as He caused water to flow from rocks for their benefit. But He went above and beyond.
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; – Exodus 16:4a
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “I have heard the grumblings of the sons of Israel; speak to them, saying, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’” – Exodus 16:11-12
We have such a caring Father. But even in this generosity, His people were expected to follow certain instructions. They were only to gather what they would need for that meal on that day. Any they gathered in excess immediately rotted or melted away. This practice we have of wanting to be certain that our futures are secure, this is a worldly concern that the enemy lays on our hearts. He causes anxiety with it. What is our God’s answer?
But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. – Matthew 6:33-34
God does not change. He casts no shifting shadow. He is I AM. No past tense, no future tense. Always present. He’ll be here in what we call tomorrow. Just as caring, just as tender. And just as determined to keep us focused on today.
He did no less for Israel.
The sons of Israel ate the manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate the manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan. – Exodus 16:5
And then they entered the land flowing with milk and honey. A land that had been prepared just for them. A land given to them by God in Heaven. He sustained them by His own hand until that day. He covered them with His wings, like a mother does with her chicks. He picked them up and carried them close to His heart. His care for them went beyond the realm of the natural or imaginable. He’s awesome like that.
We serve the same God, Dear Ones. In fact, we are now adopted as His own. Closer than those Israelites ever were.
So how then, shall I approach each day?
For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day. – 2 Timothy 1:12
It’s hard, Dear Ones, to live day to day in the wilderness. I get that. I live there. But we have to remember that God gets it, too. He’s providing, lifting, sustaining. Constantly.

So for today, I’m just going to be focused on today. I’m going to have faith, trust, and stand secure in His promise.
But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. – Matthew 6:33
How about you?
Lord, You are so beyond patient and so much more than kind. We love You. Help our unbelief. In Jesus’ Name, Amen…

A Thank You to the Prophets
Because of that experience, we have even greater confidence in the message proclaimed by the prophets. You must pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words are like a lamp shining in a dark place—until the Day dawns, and Christ the Morning Star shines in your hearts. – 2 Peter 1:19

Thank you for words that flicker like flame
in this place, so dark,
for giving me something to walk toward.
Did you know that your message would be glowing wisps of hope
in a world that stifles with its suffering?
You show me how to breathe again.
I can’t help but wonder if the Spirit showed you
how bright your proclamation would be…
cutting through the centuries with a laser focus.
One day the dawn will rise
in a bloom of glimmer so blinding and beautiful
that it will dwarf all other light.
I will see you on that day.
I will thank you with a hug.
I will touch my candle to yours,
and together we will shine Christ.
What a day that was, when you first struck the spark.
What an awesome gift to pass down through the ages.
The only way I can thank you… or thank God for you…
is to join in the lighting of this world.
Dear God, how I look forward to that beautiful Dawn and the Morning Star! Until then, help us to pay close attention. Help us to show others the way.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen…

Encouragement for Those Who Suffer (the Old Testament Version)

* The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm. – Exodus 14:14
* Even though the fig trees have no blossoms,
and there are no grapes on the vines;
even though the olive crop fails,
and the fields lie empty and barren;
even though the flocks die in the fields,
and the cattle barns are empty,
yet I will rejoice in the Lord!
I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!
The Sovereign Lord is my strength!
He makes me as surefooted as a deer,
able to tread upon the heights. – Habakkuk 3:17-19
* The thought of my suffering and homelessness
is bitter beyond words.
I will never forget this awful time,
as I grieve over my loss.
Yet I still dare to hope
when I remember this:
The faithful love of the Lord never ends!
His mercies never cease.
Great is his faithfulness;
his mercies begin afresh each morning.
I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance;
therefore, I will hope in him!”
The Lord is good to those who depend on him,
to those who search for him.
So it is good to wait quietly
for salvation from the Lord. – Lamentations 3:19-26

* Then he said to me, “This is what the Lord says to Zerubbabel: It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. Nothing, not even a mighty mountain, will stand in Zerubbabel’s way; it will become a level plain before him! And when Zerubbabel sets the final stone of the Temple in place, the people will shout: ‘May God bless it! May God bless it!’”
Then another message came to me from the Lord: “Zerubbabel is the one who laid the foundation of this Temple, and he will complete it. Then you will know that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has sent me. Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.” – Zechariah 4:6-10

* You keep track of all my sorrows.
You have collected all my tears in your bottle.
You have recorded each one in your book. – Psalm 56:8
* I love the Lord because he hears my voice
and my prayer for mercy.
Because he bends down to listen,
I will pray as long as I have breath!
Death wrapped its ropes around me;
the terrors of the grave overtook me.
I saw only trouble and sorrow.
Then I called on the name of the Lord:
“Please, Lord, save me!”
How kind the Lord is! How good he is!
So merciful, this God of ours!
The Lord protects those of childlike faith;
I was facing death, and he saved me.
Let my soul be at rest again,
for the Lord has been good to me. – Psalm 116:1-7

* The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help.
He rescues them from all their troubles.
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted;
he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
The righteous person faces many troubles,
but the Lord comes to the rescue each time. – Psalm 34:17-19
* He will not crush the weakest reed
or put out a flickering candle.
He will bring justice to all who have been wronged. – Isaiah 42:3
Holy God, we bow before your majesty. We thank You for desiring us, finding delight in us, even in what feels like a broken state. We love You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen…

Encouragement for Those Who Suffer (the New Testament Version)
* All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. Even when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation! For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you. Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer. We are confident that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in the comfort God gives us.
We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead. And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us. And you are helping us by praying for us. Then many people will give thanks because God has graciously answered so many prayers for our safety. – 2 Corinthians 1:3-11
* So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.
Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.
In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation. – 1 Peter 5:6-10
* “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you. Do you remember what I told you? ‘A slave is not greater than the master.’ Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you. And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you. They will do all this to you because of me, for they have rejected the one who sent me.” – John 15:18-21 (Jesus)

* You see, we don’t go around preaching about ourselves. We preach that Jesus Christ is Lord, and we ourselves are your servants for Jesus’ sake.
Yes, we live under constant danger of death because we serve Jesus, so that the life of Jesus will be evident in our dying bodies. So we live in the face of death, but this has resulted in eternal life for you.
But we continue to preach because we have the same kind of faith the psalmist had when he said, “I believed in God, so I spoke.” We know that God, who raised the Lord Jesus, will also raise us with Jesus and present us to himself together with you. All of this is for your benefit. And as God’s grace reaches more and more people, there will be great thanksgiving, and God will receive more and more glory.
That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever. – 2 Corinthians 4:5-18
* “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33
* So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. – Hebrews 4:14-16
* Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later. For all creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are. Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse. But with eager hope, the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay. For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us. We were given this hope when we were saved. (If we already have something, we don’t need to hope for it. But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.)
And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. – Romans 8:18-28
* What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.
Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 8:31-39

Pondering Holy

But as for me, by Your abundant lovingkindness I will enter Your house, At Your holy temple I will bow in reverence for You. – Psalm 5:7
The words of this song always inspire me to think bigger. Our God is Holy. That’s a lot to take in.
I’m singing to you again. Blessings on each of you, Dear Ones! <3
Holy God, I will never understand what You see in me that makes You love me so. But oh, how I do love you back. In Jesus’ Name, Amen…

The Leading
Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. – Galatians 5:25
Have you ever felt led to do something?
Maybe it’s something big and scary. Maybe it’s something small and insignificant. Maybe it even feels like a silly thing to keep coming into your heart. You may wonder what difference your obedience to this leading could possibly make.
Trust me on this. You could be the exact answer to someone’s prayer.
There’s a reason the Spirit keeps nudging. There’s a reason the Savior keeps reminding. There’s a reason your Father won’t let the matter drop.
No matter how impacted you are with your chronic condition and your disability, God is using you in ways you may not even realize. You matter.
That thing you’re being led to do?
Do it. He’ll handle it from there.
Dear Lord, keep whispering. Keep nudging. Help me to trust and obey. Thank You for the blessings that follow. In Jesus’ Name, Amen…

The Beauty of His Hands
You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are pleasures forever. – Psalm 16:11
He reminded me again just this week… that I never leave His hands. Never.
This song has been an anthem for me since the first time I heard it a few years ago.
Hope you enjoy me singing a little reminder today. <3
