A Review of “America the Strong”, by William J. Bennett and John Cribb

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.  Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.  This is good and pleases God our Savior,  who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. – 1 Timothy 2:1-4

We live in a culture that often dismisses and ridicules conservative values. By the time liberal professors, the news media, and Hollywood get through with them, many young Americans are convinced “conservative” means extremist and intolerant. It’s a distortion that endangers America’s future. Bill Bennett and coauthor John Cribb explain what conservatism really means, using five fundamental principles summarized by the word FLINT: Free enterprise, Limited government, Individual liberty, National defense, and Traditional values. America the Strong shows the next generation how these principles have made the United States a great nation and why they are worth preserving. It answers more than one hundred questions, from “Do conservatives hate the government?” to “What’s wrong with having an open border?” to “Why can’t rich people pay all the taxes?”

Discover a strong, clear conservative vision of America for the next generation.

This book is a treasure I stumbled upon! I knew it would be interesting, but it really strengthened my gratefulness for being an American. The country’s history, as well as the principles it was established and built on, are the foundation for Conservative values that, despite what the media would have us believe, are still just as relevant today as they were 200 years ago.

This book is perfectly timed in our country today. Especially our young people are under attack, as are we all, for our Christianity and our Conservative standards. I loved that the authors framed this book in an easy-to-understand manner that answers common questions. What is the difference between different sorts of political ideologies? What is American Exceptionalism? Should we legalize marijuana? All of this and so much more is covered in this great book.

Take your time reading this book. It is a great reference and a great gift for anyone from teens to seniors. It can be purchased in these places (among others):

How to Sav(or) a Life: Unwrap Your Gift. Yes, You.

In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly. – Romans 12:6-8

Romans twelve is a favorite chapter of mine. There’s so much gold in there for how to savor a life. I chose the above group of verses for my first post like this, because I feel so strongly about honoring and using our God-given gifts.

I hear so often, “I wish I could write like you do.” or “You always say things the way I’m thinking them. How come I can’t do that when I’m talking?”

And I say so often to others, things like:
“I wish I was crafty like you!”

“Your sense of style is something I long to be able to do!”

“I’m so jealous of how you can just open your doors and provide such refreshing hospitality!”

I’m sure we could come up with a hundred more examples, couldn’t we?

But here in the above scripture we see what God has to say on the matter. You remember Him, right? The only one whose opinion matters? (I only ask because my hard head and longing heart take a twisty path to wind back around to Him, time and time again.)

In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well.

In His grace. Wow.

Not something to be taken lightly, is it? Certainly not something I should squander by longing for the gifts of others.

gift photo

So here’s what I did. I made myself a printable to remind myself what gifts God graced me with, and how He encourages me to use them.

In his grace, God has given me gifts for doing certain things well. These gifts are different than the gifts given to others, but mine are no less important. I will enjoy and applaud when my brothers and sisters use their gifts for God’s glory. And as for me…

God has given me the ability to write, and I will speak out with as much faith as God has given me. My gift is listening, and I will listen well. I am a singer, so will rejoice well. My gift is to encourage others, so I will be encouraging. With my gift of nurturing, I will nurture generously. God has given me leadership ability, and I will take the responsibility seriously. And I have a gift for praying for others, so will do it gladly.

Thank You, Father, for the gifts You have bestowed with grace upon me. I offer back to you all I have received, and may it be multiplied. In Jesus’ Name, Amen…

Of course I’m going to share this printable with you. I’ve created the template so that you can fill in your gifts. I pray that it helps to strengthen you.

We should enjoy the gifts that God gives to others. We should thankfully follow His lead about using the gifts that He gives us.

So, You. Yes, You. Unwrap your gift.

Sunday Scripture: 1/8/17

bible photo

But someone may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?

Recommendation Saturday: A Smile is Under-Rated

“So don’t be afraid, little flock. For it gives your Father great happiness to give you the Kingdom.” – Luke 12:32

It’s true. A smile is way under-rated. Take some time out today to just soak in the sweetness of this little video. I dare you not to smile.

(** I will no longer be hosting the linkup, but I will be continuing to share just a small recommendation each Saturday.)

From No Plan To A Good Plan

path photo

The Lord will work out his plans for my life— for your faithful love, O Lord, endures forever. Don’t abandon me, for you made me. – Psalm 138:8

Don’t abandon me, for you made me.

Ok, I’ll just say it… this is my prayer on a weekly, if not daily basis.

Don’t abandon me, for you made me.

Sometimes I completely forget the first part of this verse. His faithful love indeed endures forever.

The Lord will work out his plans for my life.

I admit that I usually feel like a hot mess. And like that’s how God sees me, too. I mean, how could He not? I am absolutely certain that I am completely opposite from what He created me to be. What He called me to be. I can vividly picture Him scratching His head in confusion as He looks down at me and wonders how on earth He can possibly use me now. Do you ever feel this way?

Lots of words spring to mind. Useless. Broken. Wasted. Worthless. Small.

Those are not words that come from the Holy Spirit into my heart. No, indeed.

What happens is that I forget that God has a plan for my life. It was laid out long before I took my first breath. And because it is a plan from my Heavenly Father, I can know without a shadow of a doubt that it is a good plan.

Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. – James 1:17

O Lord my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them. – Psalm 40:5

But the Lord’s plans stand firm forever; his intentions can never be shaken. – Psalm 33:11

He has a good plan for me. He has a good plan for you, too. I don’t know what those plans are, but I can look into scripture to see examples of His plans. They blow me away, every time.

Plans for grace. Plans for salvation, even at the cost of His only Son. Plans for mercy. Plans for hope.

This same Good News that came to you is going out all over the world. It is bearing fruit everywhere by changing lives, just as it changed your lives from the day you first heard and understood the truth about God’s wonderful grace. – Colossians 1:6

For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus. – 2 Timothy 1:9

There are some awesome, intricate, amazing plans in the Old Testament, too, but this one is my favorite.

This is the God that I can trust to have a plan for me. A good plan.

Am I still a hot mess? Of course. Broken? Oh my, yes. Small? Absolutely.

faith photo

But, I am certain that God sees His Son when He looks at me. I mean, how could He not? I am absolutely certain that the Holy Spirit will enable me to be all He created me to be. What He called me to be. I can vividly picture Him kneeling in front of me to take me into His arms. He is eager to show me how He can use me now.

Maybe you needed reminding, too?

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. – Ephesians 2:10

And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. – Philippians 1:6

Jesus died for you, too. If you don’t belong to Him, please don’t delay. None of us knows what tomorrow may bring. (Matthew 24:36) By reading this post, you have now heard of Him. ( If you believe, you have taken your first glorious step. Repent and turn away from any sin or unGodly living. Confess right out loud that you believe that Jesus Christ is the only Son of God, who came in the flesh and gave His life so that we could receive salvation. Confess that you believe that He rose from the dead and took His rightful place as our Lord and Savior. Then, be baptized to wash away your sin and put on Christ. Rise to walk in newness of life, spreading God’s light through the love and mercy you spread to others.

If you have questions or need help with anything you have read here, as always, you are invited to email me at , and I will happily pray with you and we will search the scriptures together to see what God has to say on the matter.<3

Holy God, I am praying now for each soul reading this post today. Please remind them of Your goodness, Your sovereignty, and Your good plan for their life… whatever their life looks like right now. Thank You for loving us more than we can imagine. In Jesus’ Name, Amen… <3

More Ahh for Your Ugh

cocoa rest photo

No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety. – Psalm 16:9

This is the time of year, isn’t it, when we feel the tired a little more than we normally would. The hustle and bustle is over, we’re staring at all the décor that now has to come down. Work and school are back in session and we are under so much outside pressure to “make this year a great one!”

The stress, the fatigue, the anxiety… it’s bad for us, Dear Ones. It does awful things to our hearts and minds, and yes, even our bodies! Personally, anxiety played a huge roll in my chronic condition.

So, you better believe I’m all about minimizing all that angst and resting in God this year.

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. – Matthew 11:28

I’ve put together a list and hung it up where I can see it in my home. Your list may look different than mine, but I encourage you to make one. Pray about it and dedicate it and keep it right in your space.

rest photo

And so with a deep breath, here are some ideas that help me (and may help you) to adopt and maintain a mindset of peace and rest, even in the busiest of days.

* Start the day with prayer. Try the One-Minute Prayer during the most difficult times of your day. Just set a timer for one minute and talk to God. Easy Peasy. Keep that line of conversation open and don’t be afraid to be specific about what you need.

* If you’re able, choose a peaceful soundtrack for your day. My favorite is featured below, Scripture Lullabies. Perhaps you prefer instrumental music? Whatever your favorite “chill” music is, find a way to play it very quietly in the background whenever you can.

* Give yourself some love. Literally. Try a self-hug when you feel really tense. Hold the opposite shoulder with each hand, then gently apply pressure. Don’t overdo it and strain your joints. Just allow that stretch to sink into your upper back, neck and shoulders. Don’t forget to breathe while you do it.

* Touch base with someone during your day who makes you smile. Perhaps you can just send a quick text, forward a funny picture, or have a quick call during a break. Those few minutes can make a huge impact on your day!

* Never underestimate the power of a catnap. This can be literally for 5 minutes. Find a quiet spot, lay your head down, close your eyes and just rest your mind. Maybe that’s through visualization or maybe it’s emptying your brain. Whatever works for you, set your timer and get your rest on.

So that’s it. Five easy-peasy, no assembly required recommendations for de-stressing our days. I’d love if you’d share your own ideas in the comments!

You will keep in perfect peace
all who trust in you,
all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
– Isaiah 26:3

Now, get out there and…. REST! <3

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to Your rest… real rest that revives us. Please help this to become a habit this year. In Jesus’ Name, Amen…

A Review of My First Hands-On Bible by Tyndale Kids (& a Giveaway!)

Then Jesus called for the children and said to the disciples, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children.
Luke 18:16

Description:

My First Hands-On Bible is the preschooler version of the popular Hands-On Bible, which has sold nearly one million copies. Jesus taught with hands-on lessons and illustrations; My First Hands-On Bible uses the same experience-based learning to communicate God’s Word in an active, understandable way.

My First Hands-On Bible is a fun and simple, yet meaningful way to engage preschool, prekindergarten, and kindergarten children (ages 3–6) with the Bible while helping them build a solid faith foundation. Each lesson focuses on a specific Bible point through a variety of activities in order to reinforce and help young children remember the stories and lessons. Using common household items, you can help your children have a “hands-on” learning experience while engaging them in 85 key stories from the Bible.

My First Hands-On Bible doesn’t just retell the Bible stories; it also includes actual Scripture from the easy-to-understand and easy-to-read Holy Bible, New Living Translation. In addition to the stories and activities, there are fun illustrations, prayers, and a special Jesus Connection feature.

I am so impressed with this preschooler’s bible! My favorite thing about it is that it uses actual Scripture, not just a retelling of stories. But that’s certainly not all there is to be excited about when it comes to this bible!

The pages of this softcover book are durable, not the wafer-thin ones you find in other bibles. The whole thing is in full-color with adorable illustrations to capture your little one’s attention! Pocket and Cuddles, the lamb and kangaroo, greet your children in each story. You can even buy little stuffed renditions of them for your child to cuddle while you read!

The activities that are suggested in this bible are geared toward preschoolers. They are fun, simple, and don’t require a bunch of extra materials. They really do help to bring the stories to life for your child!

This bible will be one that will be a treasured keepsake, because the memories of reading it over and over along with you will be so closely tied to warm feelings of faith and love.

Savor

But thank God! He has made us his captives and continues to lead us along in Christ’s triumphal procession. Now he uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume.
2 Corinthians 2:14

I know, I know. I’m as surprised to find me in this space as you are, though I must admit it’s a giddy sort of surprise. I made a new pact with God, to write as often as He gives me words… again. And oh how the words are pouring into my heart and mind. My fingers can barely keep up.

And such peace creeps in as I write… it’s supernatural and beautiful and it feels perfect and right.

The Lord laid a big “One Word” on my heart this year. I tried to tell Him that I had laid down writing. Remember, Lord? He remembered. That lopsided grin He wore as He repeated my One Word to me… over and over and over again into my stubborn heart… that grin said He remembered, alright.

My One Word is Savor.

taste photo

Savor: taste and enjoy completely

There’s a lot to savor as I work hard to regain what has been lost for so long, physically. I savor the blessings, I really do.

Taste and see that the Lord is good.
Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!
– Psalm 34:8

But the other definition of Savor is what really captured my imagination.

Savor: a characteristic taste, flavor, or smell, especially a pleasant one

This is what we are to God. Our prayers, our faith, our testimony… our lives. He savors us. Did you know?

And when he took the scroll, the four living beings and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp, and they held gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of God’s people.
Revelation 5:8

And so, as we enter into this new year, my prayer is that we will Savor. But it is also that we will live in such a way as to be Savored.

Spreading His perfume everywhere.
Yes, Lord. May it ever be. In Your precious name, Amen… and Amen.

Our Steadfast Hope

 fear photo

The true story of Peter’s amazing rescue from prison during the early days of the Church has always been one of my favorites. Given the miracle of the last couple of months at our home, I relate even more personally with Peter in this accounting.

Whatever you are facing this week, however dire your circumstances seem, let’s take a look together at this wonderful passage of scripture and examine our steadfast hope. Shall we?

bible photo

Now about that time Herod the king laid hands on some who belonged to the church in order to mistreat them. And he had James the brother of John put to death with a sword.

There can be no mistake that Herod was solidly in the enemy’s corner. The stakes are high and the targets are God’s children.

When he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. Now it was during the days of Unleavened Bread. When he had seized him, he put him in prison, delivering him to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out before the people.

The might that evil shows when it flexes its muscles can be over-the-top intimidating. Four squads of soldiers for one non-violent man?

So Peter was kept in the prison, but prayer for him was being made fervently by the church to God.

This. This right here, that’s my favorite part. BUT prayer for him was being made to God. Fervent prayer by Peter’s brothers and sisters in Christ. Is there anything more powerful? Someone is out there praying for you, just as you are lifting others in prayer. Prayer moves God.

On the very night when Herod was about to bring him forward, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and guards in front of the door were watching over the prison. And behold, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter’s side and woke him up, saying, “Get up quickly.”

Did you see that? The Lord your God is not afraid to come right into the midst of your captivity and shine His light for all to see. You may feel surrounded, chained and held captive, but God has rescued you if you belong to Him. He will burst right onto the scene in your cell.

And his chains fell off his hands.

This is the part where I always have to pause in wonder. Selah.

And the angel said to him, “Gird yourself and put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.”

Even the smallest detail is seen to by Your helper, Your comforter. If you are a child of God, the Spirit inside of you prepares you as Jesus prepares the way.

And he went out and continued to follow, and he did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. When they had passed the first and second guard, they came to the iron gate that leads into the city, which opened for them by itself; and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel departed from him. When Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I know for sure that the Lord has sent forth His angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”

Sometimes the Father’s answers seem unreal, don’t they? And always, looking back, the threads He weaves to form the tapestry of our lives blows my mind. He’s the Unbelievable Believable. Stand in awe.

And when he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who was also called Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying. When he knocked at the door of the gate, a servant-girl named Rhoda came to answer. When she recognized Peter’s voice, because of her joy she did not open the gate, but ran in and announced that Peter was standing in front of the gate. They said to her, “You are out of your mind!” But she kept insisting that it was so. They kept saying, “It is his angel.” But Peter continued knocking; and when they had opened the door, they saw him and were amazed. But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had led him out of the prison. And he said, “Report these things to James and the brethren.” Then he left and went to another place. – Acts 12:1-17

Never underestimate the power of your testimony! So many times people are praying fervently, and the way that God answers and His sense of timing serve to bolster the hope of others. Your witness reaffirms the power of prayer and the caring of our Father.

I pray that taking a fresh look at this scripture has renewed your spirit, as it has mine. I’m praying for you today, Dear One. Take heart.

Dear God, thank You for Your precious Word. Each time we read it, we glean new gems and new insights. Thank You for the Word who created all and became flesh to set things to right and make our adoption possible. Renew our spirits, Lord. In Jesus’ Name, Amen…
